I don’t know much about Queen Naija, but from what I know with the research I did about her, she’s a vlogger doing YouTube videos. She started off doing that with her ex-husband, Chris Sails. Everything was going well until Chris decided to cheat on her. Now Queen Naija is riding alongside her son, with who she had with Chris, releasing her first EP, “Queen Naija”, on last Friday July 27th. I apologize if my introduction for this review is little bit vague, but I didn’t wanted to go into her personal details about her life and marriage, so let’s get going with this review about Queen Naija’s EP.
P.S.: This is an R&B review, not hip-hop.
The EP starts off with the first song “Medicine”. In this song, Queen Naija is singing about her cheating ex-husband, Chris Sails, and how he would feel and she would have done the same awful things to him like he did to her. The chorus on this song is insane though. Naija says things like, well I’m just going to put the whole chorus here: “How would you like it if I do the things you do?/ Put you on do not disturb and entertain these dudes/I'ma ride him crazy and you'll never have a clue/Give another guy everything that belongs to you/I'ma call up Brian, I'ma FaceTime Ryan/I'ma text Lorenzo, I'ma leave you cryin'/Don't get it twisted I can play this game too/How would you like it if I did the same to you.” Now fellas, imagine your lady telling you those things, I don’t know but it will be enough for me to go crazy and put myself in check if I don’t want to lose my woman. By the end of the song, Queen Naija expresses herself by saying, as long that nobody does it to Chris, he will never understand the pain that he caused her; basically having the taste of his own medicine. I honestly like Queen Naija’s voice on this song, and her melody suits well with the tempo of the instrumental of the song itself. The second song, “Karma” is approximately the same theme as “Medicine.” The song is again about Chris Sails, and him not being grateful and selfish towards his relationship with Naija and how they came up together, from being broke to having some success on Youtube. She also talks about how she felt because of that, like not loving herself well or maybe she wasn’t worthy enough. Beautiful hook on the song, but I felt that this song was a bit repetitive to the song “Medecine”, even though I respect and understand that she had lot to say about her past relationship. The following song is called, “Mama’s Hand.” This is actually the first song I’ve listened from her EP, which also led me to discover her EP. The message on this song is really beautiful, because it’s dedicated to her son. We can feel that Queen Naija wants what’s best for her son, and treat him like a diamond. They always say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, but Queen Naija vows to make sure that her son will treat a woman right despite his father cheating on his mother. As for the song itself, I wished the verses on the songs were longer for a 4 minute track, and on the second verse, I felt that Naija’s tempo was too quick for the beat. In other words, I felt she started the bars too quickly before the last bar ends. Approaching the end of the EP, the last two songs, “Butterflies” and “Bad Boy”, for me both songs kind of have the same theme. Queen Naija talks about her new lover in “Butterflies”, and how she wants to protect herself from being hurt again, but she feels that this new guy is special and she might be ready to take the risk with him. As for “Bad Boy”, she expresses how she doesn’t care about her new beau’s past, their relationship going fast and how both their lives and way of living are different but she’s ready to work it out. The thing I liked about the song “Bad Boy”, is the guitar at beginning of song, it reminds of a Maxwell or D’Angelo type of beat.
As far as the EP, Queen Naija goes, it was good. I like Naija’s voice and I see the potential, and in my personal opinion when she will drop her first album, I hope she will more content then her bad relationship with her ex, but then again this is her art, she can do that what she wants I guess. Before I end this review, if I’m not mistaken, the EP was produced by 30HertzBeats.
EP’s grade: 3.7/5
