Bas Milky Way

Dreamville's recording artist, Bas just dropped his third album, "The Milky Way", on August 25th 2018. Bas is a Queens, New York rapper who was born in Paris, France. Honestly, this is the first album I have ever listen from Bas, and the first time

I heard of him, was when J. Cole dropped his song, "New York Times" featuring Bas himself and 50 Cent. After writing this review I will definitely go listen to Bas previous albums, but now it's time to talk about his new album, which for me sounds like a romantic ballad, so here we go.

The album starts off with the song, "Icarus", featuring Dreamville's artist, Ari Lennox on the hook. The song has a good vibe with a nice bass to it, and Bas flow delivery is on point with the instrumental itself. "Icarus", if I'm not mistaken, is about Bas road to success, his past ventures, his vices and addictions, and how he can maintain and control himself. It took me at least 3 listens to like this song, and one bar I appreciated about this song is, "Never read the Art of War but I could write the Art of Love." The following song, "Front Desk" has the same similar vibe and bass as "Icarus". This is a pretty short and empty song and it's about a girl who only reach out to Bas when she needs him, but Bas does't give the situation too much attention, because he's all about his paper, himself and the girl doesn't have to check with him if she wants to go out with her friends. The third song is one of my favorite, "Tribe" featuring J. Cole, and if you haven't watched the video yet, stop reading this review, go see it and come back to read the rest. The guitar in the back of the instrumental gives the song an excellent vibe and, that same guitar sound is a sample from Edu Lobo's "Zum-Zum". Both rappers, Bas and J. Cole did a good job on their verses, and their flows were on point. Next up is "Boca Raton" featuring A$AP Ferg, which was the first single of the album. This song is mostly about the boys partying and chilling with girls in Boca Raton, Florida, and not to find the perfect girl. This is a good beat to listen in your car, loud and with your friends, and both rappers were on point on the beat, but I honestly preferred A$AP Ferg's verse on the song. The fifth song, "Barack Obama Special" was an ok song. Bas raps about moving away from his racist neighbors and living a better life. The following song "Purge" was better than the previous one. Bas actually spit his verses like a real MC. Lyrically he was on point and his punchlines were good, but the instrumental was ok. After two songs, I can finally bop my head to a nice instrumental to the song "Fragrance" featuring Correy C. "Fragrance" is another song about having fun with random girl, no strings attached. We are now in the second half of the album, and it starts with a skit from the movie "White Men Can't Jump", (Classic movie), a scene between Billy and Gloria. The skit is being followed by the songs "Infiniti +2" and "Sanufa", which are other short songs on the album. After the skit "Great Ones", comes "PDA" which is subject to the theme of the album with the skits Infiniti and Great Ones, where Bas expresses the way he feels about a girl who might be the one, just like the other songs, "Tribe" and "Infiniti +2". "Designer" was an ok song, I just felt the song is a bit empty with no specific theme or delivery in the song. The last song of the album is "Rockets". The song has a good party and festive vibe to it, and the girl, Jillian Hervey has a nice voice on her verse and the hook, but if Rihanna would've been on the song; certified hit.

To conclude this review, I felt the album had a couple of empty and short songs, the vibe of the album is good and positive, and I like how Bas explained his romantic ballad throughout the album. I honestly think this album should have been a mixtape, but don't count Bas out because this is his 3rd album and not his first. I'll still listen his previous work.

Album grade: 3/5

Favorite song: Tribe

Least Favorite song: Designer
